World Charter for People in Psychotherapy (from the World Council for Psychotherapy: WCP)

1 – Right to dignity and respect

Whatever his request or his mental state, the person in psychotherapy has the right to respect, dignity and integrity of his physical and mental person, without discrimination of any kind.

2 – Right to free choice

The person in psychotherapy has the right to freely choose his method and his psychotherapist, and to modify this choice, if he considers it necessary.

3 – Right to information

The person in psychotherapy has the right to know the method(s) used by the psychotherapist, as well as his qualification, training and professional affiliation.

4 – Conditions of the therapy

The conditions of the therapy must be specified before any commitment: the modalities (verbal, emotional, bodily, etc.), the duration and frequency of the sessions, the presumed duration of the treatment and its conditions of extension or cessation, the cost financial (fees, possible coverage, insurance conditions, payment for missed sessions).

5 – Right to confidentiality

The psychotherapist must undertake, with the person in therapy, to absolute professional secrecy, concerning all that is entrusted to him during the therapy. This confidentiality is an essential condition for the therapeutic relationship. It is limited by the legal provisions in force.

6 – Ethical commitment of the psychotherapist

The practitioner is required to respect the code of ethics of his reference professional body. This code is provided on request. The psychotherapist is under an obligation to assume his responsibilities: he must undertake not to use the trust established for the purposes of political, sectarian or personal manipulation (emotional dependence, economic interests, sexual relations, etc.).

7 – Grievance procedure

In the event of a complaint or a claim, the person undergoing psychotherapy can turn to professional appeal bodies or to the courts.

This Charter had been drawn up by the French Federation of Psychotherapy (FF2P) on the occasion of its Estates General, in 2001. It was voted by the WCP, on the proposal of France, on July 14, 2002, during the General Assembly of its members, gathered during the 3rd World Congress of Psychotherapy, in Vienna (Austria) — a congress which brought together 4,000 psychotherapists from 80 countries on all continents.
